National Newsletters - MLG, MLS, HLS, HLA Groups

JoHILA

The current journal produced by HLA is JoHILA (Journal of Health Information and Libraries Australasia), an open access journal, published three times per year. JoHILA publishes articles about health library and information research and practice in the Australasian region.

JoHILA's archive can be found here.

History of the national newsletters

Newsletters have been published by Health Libraries Australia (HLA) and its predecessors since the 1972 formation of a professional body for health librarians. Titles have varied through time, depending on the name of the organising group.

Original documents are stored in ALIA House, Canberra; some digitised versions are also available on READ ALIA

Back issues of all newsletters in their various incarnations have been digitised and are accessible by clicking the links in the table below.

In 2020, HLA News was discontinued and HLA launched its new journal, JoHILA

History of the group and its newsletters

At the Meeting of University Medical Librarians, Medical Library, University of Sydney, 10.00 am, 27th August, 1971 which was held during the LAA Conference in August 1971, a proposal was made to form a Medical Librarians' Group. A National Steering Committee was constituted to plan a Medical Librarians' Group with State branches. On 8th April 1974 there was a proposal for a National Organisation of Medical Library Groups. Members of the Group met during the 1975 Library Association Conference at a symposium organised by the Victorian Branch. It was decided that a National Newsletter for the Group should be produced. Newsletters 1 and 2 were produced in December 1975 and November 1977.

The Library Association of Australia, Medical Librarians Section, Newsletter No. 1 commences 24th February 1982 after the inaugural meeting in New South Wales. Inception of MLS June 1981, Total Membership 199; 4 sectional groups - NSW, VIC, WA, SA. 2 year rotation expected - to coincide with the national conference eg next in Perth with WA group.

Newsletters are indexed from 1993 in the Australian Library and Information Science Abstracts (ALISA).
